Modified on: Wed, 17 May 2023 9:53 AM

Setting up Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an important step to enhance the security of your School Microsoft account. Although the process might seem a bit complex, I'll provide you with a simplified guide to help you set up MFA for your Microsoft account. Just follow these steps:

Step 1: Gather the requirements Before you start, make sure you have the following things:

  • A Microsoft account - you must know your login details - please contact IT if you don't
  • A smartphone or tablet with an internet connection.

Step 2: Install the Microsoft Authenticator app

  1. Open the app store on your smartphone or tablet (e.g., App Store for iOS or Google Play Store for Android).
  2. Search for "Microsoft Authenticator" and tap on the app when you find it.
  3. Install the app by following the instructions on your screen.

Step 3: Enable MFA on your Microsoft account

  1. Open a web browser on your computer or another device and go to the Microsoft account security page: https://account.microsoft.com/security.
  2. Sign in to your Schhol Microsoft account using your email address and password.
  3. Once signed in, look for the "Security" or "Security & privacy" option. Click on it to access the security settings.

Step 4: Set up the Microsoft Authenticator app

  1. In the security settings, find the option for "Two-step verification" or "Multi-Factor Authentication." Click on it.
  2. Look for the "Authenticator app" option and select it.
  3. Choose your smartphone or tablet's operating system (iOS or Android) from the list provided.
  4. A QR code will appear on the screen. Take your smartphone or tablet and open the Microsoft Authenticator app you installed earlier.
  5. In the app, tap the "Add account" button (usually represented by a "+" symbol) and select the "Scan QR code" option.
  6. Use your smartphone or tablet's camera to scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen. The app will capture the QR code and configure your account automatically.

Step 5: Verify your setup

  1. Once you've scanned the QR code, the Microsoft Authenticator app will display a code or notification. Enter that code or approve the notification to complete the setup process.
  2. Go back to your computer's web browser and check if the setup was successful. You should receive a confirmation message.

You have successfully set up Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication for your Microsoft account. From now on, when you log in to your account, you will be prompted to enter a verification code from the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone or tablet.

Do not share your Microsoft account password with anyone, and protect your device with a passcode or fingerprint authentication.
